Fifty years ago, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, and his nearly five-hour expedition ushered in a new era of spaceflight for the nation.

On Feb. 20, 1962, Glenn piloted?NASA’s Mercury capsule, known as Friendship 7, three times around Earth, reaching a maximum altitude of about 162 miles (261 kilometers). Glenn’s orbital milestone matched the groundbreaking achievement of the rival Soviet Union, which launched cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into orbit 10 months earlier.

On Monday (Feb. 20), NASA will salute 50 years of Americans in orbit by honoring Glenn and his Friendship 7 flight. Since that fateful journey, the agency landed astronauts on the moon, flew 135 space shuttle flights and constructed a $100 billion laboratory in space, among many other accomplishments.

Following the Friendship 7 flight, Glenn was?heralded as an American hero, and five decades later, his orbital journey still resonates with the public.

“Fifty years seems like two weeks more than 50 years,” Glenn, who will turn 91 on July 18, told SPACE.com. “I think the duration that people have been interested in that, the first flights back there, have been somewhat of a surprise. We’re so used to the new and the untried in this country, whether it is the equivalent in automobiles or whatever it is, that I think we’ve gotten used to that. So it has been a little bit of a surprise that attention has been and keeps coming back to some of those very early flights.” [Photos: John Glenn's Space Legacy]

The social and political climate

Part of this fascination is because the success of Glenn’s Friendship 7 flight altered the tide in the?fierce Cold War competitionbetween the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. The Soviets launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, in October 1957, four years later, Gagarin became the?first person to reach space?(and the first to orbit Earth) on April 12, 1961.

“The Soviets at that time were claiming technical superiority to the United States because they could do rocket flights and ours were blowing up on the pad too often,” Glenn said. “So it was against that backdrop and their claims of superiority in rocketry that we came into the program. It was something that we felt at that time, so there was a big effort to get us back on top again.”

After?years of Soviet dominance, Glenn’s success in orbit evened the playing field and reinvigorated America’s space program, said John Logsdon, space policy expert and professor emeritus at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

“It was a time of head-on-head superpower rivalries for global leadership,” Logsdon told SPACE.com. “Everyone was recovering from World War II and it was a very tense time in U.S.-Soviet relations. Having something positive happen, particularly in an area where the Soviet Union looked like it was ahead, was politically very important.” [Giant Leaps: Top Milestones of Human Spaceflight]

The flight also captivated the public, and after returning to Earth, Glenn received a hero’s welcome in New York City.

“It was the first of the ticker-tape parades through Manhattan,” Logsdon said. “Everyone was glued to their television sets. It was new, exciting and adventurous.”

It was after seeing Glenn’s New York City parade that Logsdon himself was inspired to pursue a career related to space.

“I was in transition back to graduate school that spring and going into political science, and I remember very vividly seeing Colonel Glenn parade through Manhattan on March 1, 1962. And it was that more than Kennedy’s speech or Sputnik that got me interested in space.”

The original seven

Glenn, who was born in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1921, was one of NASA’s original seven astronauts ? the so-called Mercury Seven. The trials and tribulations of those involved in Project Mercury were later immortalized by author Tom Wolfe in “The Right Stuff.”

Selected in 1959 for the agency’s first astronaut class, Glenn beat out a pool of 508 skilled, high-flying pilots and military men. While fellow Mercury Seven astronauts?Alan Shepard?and Virgil (Gus) Grissom flew to space before Glenn, the maximum altitude for both their flights put them only in the suborbital reaches.

On that February day in 1962, Glenn circled the Earth three times in the Friendship 7 capsule before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. He became a pioneer for orbital spaceflight, and NASA would continue to push the boundaries of exploration.

And after years of Americans in orbit, Glenn hopes to see that tradition continue.

“I see exploration going two directions: one is macro, which is out to Mars or wherever we’re going out into space and back,” Glenn said. “But to me, wherever we go we should try to?maximize the research return?of the capabilities we are developing. And that is what develops the support for the program. It does more good for people right here on Earth and does more to support the program for the long term than anything else we could do.”

For instance, more emphasis should be put on the research capabilities of the?International Space Station, he added.

“To me, we have never really exploited our ability in low-Earth orbit,” Glenn said. “The International Space Station is the most unique laboratory ever built by human beings. It cost us over $100 billion and about 18 years to get it to the condition that it is in. We should be working on ways to do the research that makes the whole program doubly beneficial in addition to just seeing how far we can go and keep someone alive and bring him back.”

Life after Project Mercury

Glenn left NASA in 1964 and entered into business and politics. He was elected to the United States Senate, representing his native Ohio as a Democrat, and served from 1974 to 1999.

“Glenn’s space career is only one facet of his life,” Logsdon said. “He was a very productive senator and he made his mark on American society in a number of ways.”

Throughout his tenure, Glenn remained a fervent supporter of NASA and a strong voice for the American space program. [50 Years of Presidential Visions for Space Exploration]

And in 1998, at age 77, Glenn flew to space again on the shuttle Discovery’s STS-95 mission. After spending almost nine days in space, Glenn became the world’s oldest astronaut, a title he still holds.

Shortly before his return to space, Glenn announced the creation of the John Glenn Institute (now the John Glenn School of Public Affairs) at Ohio State University in Columbus. The school featured a special exhibit about the Friendship 7 flight on campus and will lead a series of spaceflight forums and panels to mark the 50th anniversary.

“John Glenn is, quite simply, an extraordinary American patriot,” E. Gordon Gee, president of Ohio State University, said in a statement. “He is a man of boundless courage, limitless optimism and unswerving honor. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to celebrate his tremendous achievements and his important leadership at Ohio State. He is one of this university?s ? and this nation?s ? greatest treasures.”

The school is also hosting a gala dinner Monday to honor Glenn and his achievements. Former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, who commanded the space shuttle Endeavour’s final flight, will speak at the event.

NASA is also holding special events to mark the occasion.

Today (Feb. 17) at 10 a.m. EST, NASA chief Charles Bolden and Kennedy Space Center director Bob Cabana will host a special program on?NASA Television?with Glenn and fellow Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter. Three months after Glenn’s Friendship 7 flight, Carpenter became the second American in orbit on May 24, 1962.

A news conference will be held at 3 p.m. EST at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Cape Canaveral, Fla., in the Mercury Mission Control exhibit. This event will be broadcast on NASA TV.

On Saturday (Feb. 18), Glenn and Carpenter will participate in a ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex honoring those who made Project Mercury possible. Cabana, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and astronaut Steve Robinson, who flew with Glenn on Discovery’s STS-95 mission in 1998 will speak at the event.

On Monday (Feb. 20) at 1:30 p.m. EST, Glenn and NASA administrator Charles Bolden will speak live with the crew aboard the International Space Station.

On March 2, Glenn will deliver the keynote address at a special event, called “Celebrating John Glenn’s Legacy: 50 Years of Americans in Orbit,” hosted by NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The agency’s Glenn Research Center is named for the astronaut.

Whitney Houston?s Four Charitable Giving Lessons cited by Philanthropy Expert

Seattle?.As the world morns the sad death of Whitney Houston, Seattle philanthropy expert Richard Bray cites four lessons in charitable giving that she modeled for the world.

Speak out against injustice

She spoke against Apartheid in South Africa and sang at Nelson Mandela?s 70th Birthday. Her lesson: Each of can speak out against injustice in our communities and worldwide. And we can encourage the heroes working to right wrongs and join efforts that bring healing to our world.

Focus your philanthropy efforts for impact

She created the Whitney Houston Foundation for children in 1989 focusing on homeless and health well-being of children. Her Lesson: While not everyone can have their own foundation, one can focus philanthropy on a specific area of passion and likely achieve greater impact in giving.

Don?t forget your roots in your giving

She contributed to those from her ethnic and cultural background. For example, in 1988 she raised $250,000 for the United Negro College Fund. Her lesson: Don?t forget your roots. Your philanthropy can lift-up others.

You have a gift to give

She gave the all the earnings from her 1991 hit the Star Spangled Banner to the Red Cross. Her Lesson: Each of us has been given a gift. Some of us can serve food at a homeless shelter. Others may be able to start a foundation or other means for significant financial giving. You can use your estate planning to leave a charitable legacy. Whatever your gift, you can use it to bring hope in our world.

?Whitney Houston gave us beautiful songs that lifted our spirits and shared some important lessons in charitable giving. We can learn from her generosity and resolve to be more effective in our personal giving in tribute to her,? says Richard Bray, Strategic Philanthropy Advisor and Renton resident.

Bray adds, ?May she R.I.P. and experience ?The Greatest Love of All? throughout eternity.?

New To Muscle Building? Try These Great Tips! | New Health and …

New Health And Fitness.Org – Health Information You Can Use

You may think building muscle mass is no more than signing up at a gym and throwing around dumbbells until you collapse, but you are wrong. Many factors influence your ability to successfully build and strengthen muscles the right way. The information below can help you obtain optimal results while building your muscles.

Recognize that the requirements of serious muscle building and intense cardiovascular exercise (such as marathon training) are not compatible. Cardio is essential for good fitness, but too much cardio may cancel out your attempts at bulking up through strength training. If your focus is to build muscle, concentrate on strength-training.

A common problem is the willingness to sacrifice form for speed. Performing an exercise with care and deliberation, will give you far better results than quickly churning out sets in bad form. Take things slowly, ensuring that you are doing the exercise the right way.

If you plan on using creatine, use it with caution when taking it for any extended amount of time. Check with your doctor and let him know about specific kidney problems you are having. There are other side effects from creatine, including heart arrhythmias and muscle disorders like cramping. People who are still growing are at the greatest risk of potential harm. Read the label and make sure that you do not take more than recommended amount.

Avoid rapidly boosting your protein intake immediately after you begin your new workout plan. Unless there is enough exercise to burn off this increased caloric intake, the likely result is going to be fat production and the wrong sort of weight gain. Try gradually increasing your protein about three hundred calories every few days so that your body can start building muscle better.

Don?t overexercise ? only workout three or four times per week. This can give your body time to recover. You may find yourself making no progress towards your goals or even injuring yourself if you try to maintain a workout schedule that is too strenuous.

This article has surely shown you that there are many simple tasks that you can incorporate into your everyday life to enjoy muscle building success. Now that you know how to build muscles, start doing it right away. The sooner you begin, the sooner you?ll get results.

Director, Writer named for “The Crow” (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? A day after the Weinstein Co. and Relativity Media settled their lawsuit over the movie “The Crow,” Relativity on Tuesday said that it has attached a director and writer to the remake.

F. Javier Gutierrez, director of the Spanish-language apocalyptic thriller “Before the Fall,” will direct. He is now filming “The Monkey’s Paw” in Spain.

Jesse Wigutow, who recently rewrote “The Osterman Weekend,” based on the Robert Ludlum novel, for Summit, will write the script.

Relativity says its adaptation of Alex Proyas’ 1994 cult classic will be “a gritty reboot of the iconic character Eric Draven, who returns from the grave as “The Crow” on a mission to avenge his wife’s murder, so that his soul can finally rest.”

The studio hasn’t yet announced a release date or cast.

Edward R. Pressman, who produced the original, is producing along with Jeff Most and Relativity’s CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh.

Relativity co-president Tucker Tooley and Farah Films’ Dan Farah will executive produce. Harvey and Bob Weinstein, of The Weinstein Company, also will executive produce.

The Weinstein Company had sued Relativity, alleging that it had reneged on a deal to allow it to distribute the dark superhero film. On Monday, Relativity and Weinstein announced that they had settled the case and that the companies would partner on the remake.

GPS uncovers possible Southwest quake risk

The U.S. Southwest isn’t particularly known for its seismic activity, but the Rio Grande Rift, a series of faults and basins that runs from central Colorado south through New Mexico, is alive and stretching, new research shows.

Scientists had suspected the rift might be dead, but measurements of its movement varied widely and were riddled with uncertainties. Now, thanks to state-of-the-art GPS technology, geophysicists have found the rift is indeed extending ? just very slowly.

And of course, anytime a large chunk of the Earth’s crust moves, the issue of earthquakes arises.

“There’s certainly potential for earthquakes in this region,” said Anne Sheehan, a seismologist at the University of Colorado at Boulder who co-authored the new study. “They would be very low-probability events but, like all earthquakes, they could have large consequences if they do happen.”

Not dead, but not thriving
Sheehan began studying the region after noticing something odd in the mantle underlying the Rio Grande Rift. Studies had shown that seismic waves move through this part of the mantle very slowly, hinting that it could be quite hot. It could also mean that the overlying continental crust is spreading apart, Sheehan thought.

Using a large network of GPS stations ? nearly 300 sites ? her team monitored the rift’s movement over four years. They found that the rift is in fact spreading very slowly, at a rate of about 0.1 millimeters per year.

“That’s really pretty small,” Sheehan told OurAmazingPlanet. “The rift is not dead, but it’s not really thriving, either.”

More surprisingly, the team found that the spreading isn’t focused at the rift itself, but is spread across a span of more than 370 miles (600 kilometers).

“That wasn’t what we expected, because the deformation at the surface has been along faults that are relatively narrow,” said Henry Berglund, a geophysicist at UNAVCO who led the study. “Instead, we observed the deformation is likely much broader than that ? at least the width of the state of New Mexico.”

    4. Magnetic soap created, could cleanup oil spills

A real earthquake risk?
As for earthquake risks, Berglund explained, “It’s not a predictive tool, but it does tell us that, if the deformation is broader, maybe we’re more likely to have earthquakes in more places than we previously expected.?

There was a magnitude-5.3 quake near Trinidad, Colo., last August, and a larger earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.6 in north-central Colorado in 1882. A magnitude-5.5 quake shook Dulce, N.M., in 1966. Future quakes in the region could also fall in the magnitude-5 or -6 range, but likely not much higher, Sheehan said.

“We can’t use this to say we expect to see a big earthquake anywhere in the region,” Sheehan cautioned. “But a more worrisome aspect is that we don’t really expect earthquakes here, so our building codes aren’t as strict as they are in, say, California.”

The team’s findings appear in the January issue of the journal Geology.

Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich led the Marine squad in 2005 that killed 24 Iraqis in the town of Haditha after a roadside bomb exploded near a Marine convoy, killing one Marine and wounding two others.

Wuterich’s plea Monday interrupted his trial at Camp Pendleton before a jury of all combat Marines who served in Iraq.

Wuterich faces a maximum of three months confinement, two-thirds forfeiture of pay and a rank demotion to private when he’s sentenced, likely on Tuesday.

The issue at the court martial was whether Wuterich reacted appropriately as a Marine squad leader in protecting his troops in the midst of a chaotic war or disregarded combat rules and ordered his men to shoot and blast indiscriminately at Iraqi civilians. Wuterich was charged with nine counts of manslaughter, among other charges, and is one of eight Marines initially charged. None has been convicted.

Prosecutors said he lost control after seeing the body of his friend blown apart by the bomb and led his men on a rampage in which they stormed two nearby homes, blasting their way in with gunfire and grenades. Among the dead were women, children and elderly people, including a man in a wheelchair.

Wuterich’s former squad members testified that they did not take any gunfire during the 45-minute raid on the homes nor find any weapons, but several squad members testified that they do not believe they did anything wrong, fearing insurgents were inside hiding.

The prosecution was further hurt by the testimony of Wuterich’s former platoon commander who said the squad was justified in its actions because house was declared “hostile,” and from what he understood of the rules of combat at the time that meant any use of force was allowed and Marines did not need to positively identify their targets.

Wuterich has said he regretted the loss of civilian lives but believed he was operating within military combat rules.

After Haditha, Marines commanders ordered troops to try and distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The killings in Haditha on Nov. 19, 2005, still fuel anger in Iraq and were the primary reason behind demands that U.S. troops not be given immunity from their court system. It is considered among the war’s defining moments, further tainting America’s reputation when it was already at a low point after the release of photos of prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison.

The trial was delayed for years by pre-trial wrangling between the defense and prosecution, including over whether the military could use unaired footage from an interview Wuterich gave in 2007 to CBS “60 Minutes.” Prosecutors eventually won the right to view the footage

Six squad members have had charges dropped or dismissed, including some in exchange for testifying at the trial. One was acquitted.

Why Did Chelsea Handler Dump 50 Cent?

On Howard Stern’s show Monday, Chelsea Handler was surprisingly (or maybe not that surprisingly) candid about her ill-fated relationship with 50 Cent.

She wasted no time confirming that this rumored couple was in fact a couple, and revealing what her friends thought and why they ultimately split up.

“He’s actually a lot different than you would think,” she said. “He’s really sweet. I thought it was kind of amusing that I would even be with 50 Cent.”

50 Cent and Chelsea Handler

“My friends all loved him, my friends fell in love with him,” she said, including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, who were as surprised as us.

“They loved that I was dating him. They were like, ‘Chelsea, come on.’ They were both laughing really hard at it – everyone was – but they loved him.”

So what went wrong? “We dated for a couple months and then we had a falling out,” she said. “One of his ex-girlfriends was coming onto my show.”

She did not say who, but that was apparently the end of it. Why?

According to Handler, Fiddy wanted to give her a heads up that his ex still had feelings for him, but Chelsea had other things – her job – on her mind.

“I was like, at my job,” she said. “It was just so juvenile, I couldn’t get past that. I was at work. I hung up and I’ve never spoken to him again.”

But that’s not to say there are any hard feelings, at least not on her part: “I do think he’s a really nice guy and I think he’s smart in a certain way.”

Considering it’s Chelsea Handler we’re talking about, that’s as nice of a compliment as anyone, let alone an ex of hers, could possibly expect.

We just hope 50 doesn’t read this story. He’s already despondent of late, we don’t need him firing off anymore introspective suicidal-sounding tweets.

(AP) ? Unwilling to wait for an evening debate, Republican presidential rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich got a head start on the squabbling on Monday in a campaign turning more caustic by the day.

Romney, trounced by Gingrich in last weekend’s weekend South Carolina primary, began airing a harshly critical new campaign ad and said the former House speaker had engaged in “potentially wrongful activity” with the consulting work he did after leaving Congress in the late 1990s.

Gingrich retorted that Romney was a candidate who was campaigning on openness yet “has released none of his business records.”

He followed up two hours before the debate by arranging the release of a contract his former consulting firm had with the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. for a retainer of $25,000 per month in 2006, or a total for the year of $300,000. The agreement called for “consulting and related services.”

Despite Romney’s attempts to call Gingrich a lobbyist, the contract makes no mention of lobbying.

Aside from Romney and Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul had spots on the debate stage for the first of two encounters scheduled before the Jan. 31 Florida primary.

Increasingly, though, the race for the nomination appeared to be a two-way competition between the former Massachusetts governor and the one-time speaker of the House.

After relying on allies to make most of the attacks on his rivals earlier in the campaign, Romney unleashed a commercial that went straight at Gingrich.

“While Florida families lost everything in the housing crisis, Newt Gingrich cashed in,” the TV ad says, noting that the former speaker made more than $1.6 million working for Freddie Mac. “Gingrich resigned from Congress in disgrace and then cashed in as a D.C. insider.”

Gingrich never registered as a lobbyist, but said he was a consultant for Freddie Mac, the federally backed mortgage company that played a significant role in the housing crisis.

It remains to be seen if Romney can effectively use his newly aggressive stance on the debate stage, a forum in which Gingrich has excelled so far. Underfunded and overmatched by Romney’s massive ground game across the country, Gingrich has relied upon strong debate performances to build support.

It appears Romney has brought in outside help to improve his debate technique.

Veteran debate coach Brett O’Donnell was spotted at a Romney campaign stop on Monday. He previously advised President George W. Bush and GOP nominee John McCain and was a senior adviser and speech writer for Michele Bachmann’s abbreviated campaign.

Gingrich showed no signs of backing down.

During an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” he referred to Romney as “somebody who has released none of his business records, who has decided to make a stand on transparency without being transparent.” After initially balking, Romney is set to release personal tax records on Tuesday.
