Are you a DIY-er (Do It Yourself) when it comes to cars? Want to understand more about your vehicle before heading to the mechanic?

The new Auto Repair Reference Center interface provides for an increased amount of content with access to repair information for more than 37,000 vehicles. In-depth repair coverage?representing the most comprehensive collection of automobile repair reference information in the market?is provided for each vehicle.

The information in the Auto Repair Reference Center comes from Nichols Publishing, the former publisher of the Chilton auto repair manuals. It has nearly 857,000 drawings and step-by-step photographs, approximately 99,000 technical services bulletins and recalls, and over 158,600 wiring diagrams.

The first step in using the AARC is to choose the year of the vehicle (anything from a 1954 Volkswagen Beetle to a 2010 Subaru Forester), then work through the make, model, and engine specifications. Most vehicles have repair information, technical service bulletins, wiring diagrams, maintenance intervals, full specifications, an estimator for labor times and costs, and diagnostic information.

For example, say you wanted to find the capacity of the fuel tank for a 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup with a V6 engine. Checking the Specifications area, then Capacities, the truck has a 18.1 gallon fuel tank. Good to know.

If you want a diagram of the horn for the same vehicle, click on Diagrams > Horns.? The diagram opens as an Adobe PDF document that you can print or save for later reference. Finally, you can find instructions for removing the tailgate under Repair Information > Body > Doors/Lids & Hood/Trunk. These instructions can also be printed, saved, or emailed.

Each screen has a couple of tabs at the top of the screen: Vehicle Search will take you back to the initial search screen for the vehicles. The AutoIQ tab has short video presentations about the different parts and system of a vehicle. The topics include fuel management, heating and air conditioning, and brakes.

The Care & Repair Tips section opens a new window with links for almost everything you need to know about caring or and repairing your vehicle, from the necessary tools to buying parts and supplies. You can use this section to learn more about what your mechanic tells you, or to learn how to do basic maintenance yourself.

Finally, the Troubleshooting tab is a great place to start to diagnose problems with your vehicle. For instance, say no air comes out when you turn on the air conditioning. Choose Climate Control > Air Conditioner and the link to the specific issue. The ARRC suggests several remedies, including checking the air conditioner fuse or loose wiring. I can go back to the Vehicles section to find specifics for checking those in my vehicle.

The study, “Oscillatory Dynamics of Cdc42 GTPase In The Control of Polarized Growth,” appears May 18 in the journal Science Express.

Assistant Professor Dimitrios Vavylonis and graduate student Tyler Drake joined a University of Miami research team led by Associate Professor Fulvia Verde to learn that protein Cdc42 begins the ballet of proteins that change cell polarity, by oscillating throughout the cellular membrane of new cells. By changing polarity, Cdc42 regulates shape, structure and function in yeast cells. This oscillatory mechanism may be a general strategy among all self-organizing biological systems, not just simple yeast.

Researchers used fluorescent markers to tag each of the many proteins involved, observing the protein oscillate, switching sides about every five minutes. The fluctuations provide an adaptable mechanism for cells to control their size and structure in the fast-changing environment within.

The findings demonstrate just part of the complex process of cell growth and differentiation, but mark how advanced the science of biophysics has become. Only recently has the clear imaging and monitoring of protein activity become possible at the minute sizes and shortened time scales of individual cell maturation.

Vavylonis’s research has for years explored the way the cellular cytoskeleton organizes and functions. In collaboration with biologists and computer scientists, his team uses physics to study, analyze, and model the physical properties of these adaptive biological materials.

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and by individual university groups including a Lehigh Class of 1968 Junior Faculty Fellowship and a Sigma Xi grant to Drake.

Urologic conditions like urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and prostate cancer are a major economic burden on Americans, resulting in health care costs of close to $40 billion annually, according to a newly released national report that charts the demographic and economic impact of urologic diseases in the U.S.

Urologic Diseases in America (UDA), last published in 2007, has been revised and updated for 2012 and includes a wealth of new, detailed information on the utilization of resources and the costs associated with urologic diseases among men, women and children. The information is organized in tables and designed for use by academic and public health researchers, clinicians, and government officials who are studying these conditions.

Researchers from UCLA, the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and RAND Health teamed to develop UDA and the 500-page update. The new edition includes the latest urologic information available and was expanded to include more pediatric conditions.

“Few other medical fields have a dedicated source of extensive utilization and cost information that is easily accessible,” said UDA’s editor and co-principal investigator, Dr. Christopher S. Saigal, an associate professor in the department of urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a researcher with UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

UDA has proven to be an invaluable source of data. The project and its collaborators, which include researchers from across the country, have analyzed UDA data and published more than 70 papers in academic journals, providing key insights into the prevalence, treatment patterns, costs and overall impact of urologic conditions.

Here are a few examples:

• In a UDA study published in the March 2012 edition of the journal Cancer, researchers found that nearly all patients with high-grade, non-invasive bladder cancer are not receiving the guideline-recommended care that would best protect them from disease recurrence.
• A study published in the July 2011 edition of the journal Urology found that clinical guidelines for benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition involving enlargement of the prostate that affects more than half of men in their 60s, were only followed to a moderate degree and that great variations in care existed from region to region in the U.S.
• A March 2011 study in the Journal of Urology showed that a treatment for urinary urge incontinence in which electrical stimulation is applied to the sacral nerve through an implanted device was less acceptable to the general public than expected from clinical trials. Only 24 percent of patients underwent a “basic” trial run of the device, and only 51 percent of those who underwent an “advanced” evaluation of the device chose to receive a permanent device.

In conducting further research, scientists can now work with an interactive version of the report on the UDA website that allows them to produce their own personalized tables and graphs, helping them customize and accelerate their research findings.

“We hope the new edition of UDA will continue to help academic and clinical communities better understand the impact of these conditions and inspire us to continue to confront new problems and ideas,” said Dr. Mark S. Litwin, professor and chair of the urology department at the Geffen School of Medicine and a researcher with the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The new edition of UDA is the first full update since 2007 and includes data gathered between 2002 and 2007. The original report included data from 1992 to 2001.

A 14 year old is not able to get a license for that, only your parents would. Usually to obtain this kind of license, you need a legit reason, you cannot just get one because you want one, which basically means you cannot have one as a regular pet, you can just get them for rehabilitating or like zoos can have these animals for educations purposes ect.

Even if it was legal, you are not old enough or mature enough to care for and handle this kind of pet. They are wild animals, not domesticated like most common pets, so it takes experience to own and handle them. Young kids should not have these kinds of pets. They can be destructive without the right care and proper knowledge. They can chew things, they can bite, they cannot be kept in a cage, they need special vets (regular vets usually won?t see wild animals because of health risks) so you would probably need to drive hours and pay quite a fee to get it taken care of, they have special dietary requirements, and they live longer than you can commit to at this age.

Maybe in 15 years if you?re still interested and you live in a different state where pet raccoons are legal, and you do a lot of research and find someone who breeds them, then you can start to consider it. But all in all I would not suggest getting a pet raccoon. You may think they?re cute, but that doesn?t mean you should own one.

Raccoons aren?t even rodents, if you don?t know that, you shouldn?t be owning one regardless. It takes tons of knowledge, money, and responsibility to own wild animals.
